Katniss and Peeta Mallark two very important characters of the hunger games. Katniss first meets Peeta the winter after her father died. He was given a task by his mother to feed the pigs with a burnt loaf of bread from his parent's bakery, but instead he gave it to Katniss when he noticed she was in desperate need of food. Throughout the story Katniss finds herself repetitively owing something to Peeta. Katniss tried to avoid Peeta for a very long time because of the embarrassment she felt that winter. The time came for the reaping of the 74th hunger games. Katniss volunteered in place of her sister, Primrose, who was chosen as the girl tribute, while Peeta was chosen as the boy tribute. From then on it was impossible for them to ignore one another.
